The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the value of health, saying, “Take advantage of five matters before five other matters: your youth before you become old, your health before you fall sick, your wealth before you become poor, your free time before you become busy, and your life before your death.” (Hadith – Al-Hakim). This narration highlights how health is a privilege that should not be taken for granted.
When we are healthy, we can worship Allah with ease, perform good deeds, and fulfill our obligations towards our families and communities. However, when health is neglected, it can affect every aspect of our lives, including our ability to connect with Allah spiritually. Gratitude for health is expressed through taking care of our bodies and using our strength for righteous purposes.

Islam’s Emphasis on Health and Wellness
Islam places great importance on maintaining physical and mental health. The Qur’an reminds us, “And do not throw [yourselves] with your own hands into destruction.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:195). This verse encourages us to adopt healthy lifestyles and avoid actions that can harm our bodies. Similarly, the Prophet (peace be upon him) advised moderation in eating and drinking, saying, “The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls to keep him going. If he must fill it, then one-third for his food, one-third for his drink, and one-third for air.” (Hadith – Tirmidhi).
The Sunnah provides practical examples of maintaining health, including regular physical activity, cleanliness, balanced diets, and adequate rest. Acts like performing ablution (wudu) not only prepare us for prayer but also promote hygiene. Fasting in Ramadan, aside from its spiritual benefits, has scientifically proven health advantages such as detoxification and improving metabolism.
Health and Spiritual Connection
Good health allows us to strengthen our relationship with Allah. When we are well, we can stand in prayer, bow, and prostrate, fulfilling our acts of worship with ease. Even when we fall ill, Islam teaches us that sickness can be a means of purification. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “No fatigue, illness, anxiety, sorrow, harm, or sadness afflicts a Muslim—not even a thorn that pricks him—except that Allah expiates some of his sins thereby.” (Hadith – Bukhari and Muslim).
This perspective encourages patience and trust in Allah during times of ill health. It reminds us that every difficulty is an opportunity for spiritual growth and that our trials are never without purpose.

Our Responsibility to Preserve Health
As stewards of our bodies, we have a duty to care for them. Neglecting health through poor lifestyle choices contradicts the trust Allah has placed in us. Regular exercise, a nutritious diet, mental well-being, and avoiding harmful habits like smoking or overeating are all ways to honor this trust.
Moreover, seeking medical treatment is also encouraged in Islam. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Make use of medical treatment, for Allah has not made a disease without appointing a remedy for it.” (Hadith – Bukhari). This shows that while we rely on Allah, we must also take proactive steps to maintain and restore our health.
